 "Synchronizing Global Patent Prosecution"

6:00-7:00 p.m.-Registration/hosted cocktails and appetizers 7:00 p.m. - Dinner and program

SVIPLA is pleased to welcome DLA Piper U.S. as co-sponsor for our November dinner meeting.  They will host cocktails and appetizers from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Thank you DLA Piper!

PROGRAM:
Coordinating global prosecution raises complex issues of procedure and substance, which differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. What works for one applicant, for one patent, in one set of countries or even a single country, may not be a suitable strategy or cost point for other prosecution of that IP.  This panel will explore various underlying considerations and take a deep dive into some basic strategies that apply in numerous instances.  Open audience participation will be highly encouraged and the panelists look forward to addressing various adjustments of the basic strategies to suit other fact patterns that applicants often encounter.

PANELISTS:

Since founding RYUKA IP Law Firm in Tokyo, Japan, Akihiro Ryuka has spoken extensively in Japan and abroad on IP topics, has published numerous articles including recently detailing RYUKA’s invention consulting services (Patent Visualization), and visits clients and attends conferences in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He lectures regularly on coordinating global patent prosecution and has developed a series of written materials on the subject. Recent work includes representing a large US client in nullity trials before the Japan IP High Court and Supreme Court, and representing a large Korean client in infringement and nullity trials in cooperation with Anderson Mori & Tomotsune.

Kevin Mack currently serves as Assistant Chief Patent Counsel at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco where he manages worldwide patent prosecution strategy for Dolby’s audio patent portfolio. Before joining Dolby, Kevin was a patent litigator at the Palo Alto office of Skadden Arps and a member of the patent asset development group at Yahoo! Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Kevin was an engineer at Oracle, BMW, and Deloitte. Kevin holds a J.D. from U.C. Berkeley and dual Master’s degrees from Stanford in Electrical Engineering and Management Science. He also is a fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.

Andrew Schwaab is a second-generation patent attorney in DLA Piper's Silicon Valley office. He has over 20 years of intellectual property experience and focuses on strategic intellectual property matters, including counseling, sophisticated patent prosecution, patent litigation, licensing, validity and infringement analyses/opinions, due diligence and freedom-to-operate issues. Among other things, his practice includes managing all aspects of extensive U.S. and foreign patent portfolios for a range of clients, from startups to Fortune 50 companies as well as providing strategic advice and developing patent portfolios for start-ups with global counseling needs in the software, Web, mobile and other high-tech fields.
