    Please join our panel of former in-house counsel and licensing executives to discuss how a commercial approach to patent prosecution can help maximize global licensing revenue, in industries from medical devices, to biopharma, to telecommunications. Jason Novak, Tom Anderton, Freddy Thiel along with moderator Ivan Chaperot will present their extensive in-house insights as we bring together a panel who have long term in-house experience in different industries.

    Discussion will include:

    • How the different laws of different countries are taken into account when building a patent portfolio - from harvesting to foreign filing, including an update of the upcoming UPC
    • How soon the licensing team should cooperate with the prosecution team to optimize revenues. The discussion will cover specific examples on how the different teams are organized in different industries

    Jason Novak, Partner, K&L Gates, is a former Director IP Counsel at Thermofisher, and will focus on bio instrumentation and software.
    Tom Anderton, Attorney, Squire Patton Boggs, is former in-house Counsel at Zonare Medical Systems and VP-IP affairs at Presidio Pharmaceutical, and will give the perspective from the medical devices and pharma sector.
    Freddy Thiel, European Patent Attorney, Kilburn & Strode, and now the VP of their new Liaison Office in San Francisco, and former in-house Counsel at Orange, who will discuss the telecommunication and software sector perspective.

    "Obtaining Unitary Patents - Effects of UPC Ratification & Creation of New Pan-European Patent System"

    Learn the procedures for obtaining a Unitary Patent, the benefits and the costs, and also learn the structure and responsibilities of the various branches of the Unified Patent Court, as well as an update on the state of play in terms of the ratification of the UPC, which will create this new pan-European patent system.

    Albert Keyack is the EPO Attaché to the United States. He previously served from 2011-2015 as Intellectual Property Attaché for the United States to Latin America. Albert began his career over 25 years ago at a law firm where his practice included both patent prosecution and litigation. More recently he has practiced in law firms and served as in house counsel. He has represented clients in matters involving patents as well as in a variety of transactional matters and in litigation across a broad array of technological fields. Albert earned a degree in Engineering from Villanova University and a law degree from Rutgers University.

    Heather McCann, Partner, EIP Europe LLP, is regularly cited in the Legal 500, Chambers & Partners and IAM Patent 1000 guides as a leading practitioner. She divides her time between EIP's offices in London and San Diego, from where she regularly advises Silicon Valley tech start-ups, SMEs and US law firms on European patent filing and prosecution strategy. Heather joined EIP in 2002 from the IP Division of a major telecoms company. Heather has significant experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for innovation relating to the Internet of Things, security, computer systems and architecture, desktop applications, signal processing, wireless modem technologies, a range of networking topologies and protocols, electronic messaging systems and electronic trading systems. She has represented clients at opposition and appeal proceedings at the EPO on numerous occasions, and provides support on litigation matters, worldwide. Heather has extensive experience of developing, communicating and implementing IP strategies.

    Nick Shipp, Partner, Kilburn & Strode, has done patent prosecution for some of the world’s largest and most successful consumer electronics and telecoms companies. He has developed a passion for mentoring start-ups and other high-growth companies, and is well regarded in London’s tech scene as a key IP strategist, advising many successful European start-ups on the development of their global IP portfolios through international expansion and investment rounds. Nick provides his experience and expertise to companies in the United States, and particularly in Silicon Valley, while keeping on the pulse in the European tech scene. Technically, Nick has an academic background in electronic engineering, including practical experience designing and fabricating spintronicFETs. His practice has now become focused around the protection of software inventions. In practice this means working with companies specialising in everything from machine learning to artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics to fintech.
