Program:
Learn the procedures for obtaining a Unitary Patent, the benefits and the costs, and also learn the structure and responsibilities of the various branches of the Unified Patent Court, as well as an update on the state of play in terms of the ratification of the UPC, which will create this new pan-European patent system.
Panel:
Albert Keyack is the EPO Attaché to the United States. He previously served from 2011-2015 as Intellectual Property Attaché for the United States to Latin America. Albert began his career over 25 years ago at a law firm where his practice included both patent prosecution and litigation. More recently he has practiced in law firms and served as in house counsel. He has represented clients in matters involving patents as well as in a variety of transactional matters and in litigation across a broad array of technological fields. Albert earned a degree in Engineering from Villanova University and a law degree from Rutgers University.
Heather McCann, Partner, EIP Europe LLP, is regularly cited in the Legal 500, Chambers & Partners and IAM Patent 1000 guides as a leading practitioner. She divides her time between EIP's offices in London and San Diego, from where she regularly advises Silicon Valley tech start-ups, SMEs and US law firms on European patent filing and prosecution strategy. Heather joined EIP in 2002 from the IP Division of a major telecoms company. Heather has significant experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for innovation relating to the Internet of Things, security, computer systems and architecture, desktop applications, signal processing, wireless modem technologies, a range of networking topologies and protocols, electronic messaging systems and electronic trading systems. She has represented clients at opposition and appeal proceedings at the EPO on numerous occasions, and provides support on litigation matters, worldwide. Heather has extensive experience of developing, communicating and implementing IP strategies.
Freddy Thiel, Senior Associate, Kilburn & Strode, first joined the IP field as an in-house patent engineer in the connector industry where he was in charge of patent harvesting and profile for the company's European and Asian division. After qualifying as a European Patent Attorney in 2005, he joined one of the major telecommunications operators in Europe to develop the patent portfolio for its international labs, harvesting inventions from various countries. Freddy has a strong understanding of in-house IP issues and needs - from budgets to strategies. In the course of his in-house and private practice experience, he has analyzed over 400 inventions that let to patent filings, drafting patent applications on a majority of these himself. He has managed a broad and diverse range of filing programs before the French Patent Office, EPO, USPTO and WIPO. He has also mentored a number of start-ups to identify and capture their IP.
