Hear perspective on the outlook for patenting AI inventions from in-house practitioners. The panel will look at how innovation in Artificial Intelligence Technology can be embodied in a practical or technical application and how to make the best of the current patent laws.

PANEL
Zion Maffeo, Director of Legal & Business Affairs, Apex.AI, Inc.
Zion serves as Director of Legal & Business Affairs at Apex.AI a young company focused on building mission critical software for autonomous vehicles.  Prior to joining Apex.AI, Zion led the legal team at DiDi Labs - the US research arm of China based rideshare giant DiDi Chuxing. At DiDi Labs, Zion built a global patent portfolio and led technology license negotiations for DiDI’s ventures in Brazil, Japan, and Mexico.  Zion also worked at Faraday Future and Esri where he provided legal support and guidance on patent prosecution, technology licensing, and data privacy.  Zion received his J.D., from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 2012. He received a B.S. in Chemistry Computation from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. He is a member of the California Bar and also a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  

Vishnu Ramaswamy, Associate General Counsel, Western Digital Corporation
Vishnu is a director in the Patent Asset and Development team at Western Digital.  Prior to that, he was a partner at Dickinson Wright in its Washington DC office, primarily practicing in the areas of patent procurement, IP due diligence, and licensing.  Prior to working in the legal field, Vishnu was an engineer at several companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Atmel (acquired by Microchip), Sun Microsystems, and Power Integrations.  His engineering work focused on all aspects of semiconductor manufacturing, principally in mixed signal design for non-volatile memory products.

Jonah Probell, IP Strategist, SoundHound Inc.
Jonah manages the IP portfolio for SoundHound, a company that turns sound into understanding and actionable meaning. He is a patent agent and veteran of six startups over the past 19 years. Jonah just completed the third edition of his book, Patenting for the Small Company.

Tom Hamer, VP of San Francisco Liaison Office, Kilburn & Strode
Tom handles large portfolios and prosecutes patent applications in a variety of jurisdictions. Tom’s particular area of expertise lies in mitigating IP-related risks when bringing a new product to market, and in this role he has conducted due diligence and freedom-to-operate work for product launches for all types of products, from baby bottles to large medical devices.Tom works with a wide range of clients, from fledgling start-ups to multinational corporations, and in every case is keen to understand both the technological and the commercial issues which are important to his clients. Tom’s technical areas include medical devices, software, artificial intelligence (AI), and mathematical algorithms

Moderator: Ernie Beffel, Jr., Founding Partner, Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld LLP
Ernie's experience is both broad and deep, and includes patent prosecution and development, the preparation of opinions on infringement and validity of patents, pre-litigation analysis and resolution of licensing issues, due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions, as well as general advice pertaining to IP strategies and portfolio management.  Ernie is well-versed not only in the variety of technical and scientific subject matter involved in IP matters, but also at converting such complex information into easily-understood straight-talk.  In his fourth decade, his clients have ranged in size from multi-national corporations, to foreign and domestic privately-owned companies, to small U.S.-based ventures.
